Miles Davis and Gil Evans became long-time collaborators starting in 1948 with their work on the “Birth of the Cool” recording. It became one of the most famous albums in all jazz history. Miles soon emerged as one of the leading innovators in jazz, always seeking out the best musicians for his musical explorations. Gil Evans, who was heavily influenced by Spanish and Brazilian composers, was Miles’ top choice as an arranger of unusual repertoire for jazz bands with augmented orchestral instrumentation (including flutes, French horns and low brass). Together they created the groundbreaking 1957 recording, “Miles Ahead.” Don’t miss this opportunity to hear these rarely performed works, as we augment the SRJO with special guests on French horn, tuba and more, and feature virtuoso solo performances from members the SRJO trumpet section playing “My Ship,” “The Maids of Cadiz,” "Springville," “Blues for Pablo” and “The Duke.”
