Tell us about yourself!
Sirena Gelato was started by Brian Ugurlu, when he did a UW study abroad in Italy in 2005. He enjoyed the gelato so much there, upon his return, he asked his parents for help in getting it started.  Brian picked the name Sirena as it means "mermaid" in Italian. During classical times, mermaids called the sailors into port, and since we are near the water, we thought it was a fun logo to have.

What inspired you to open the store?
With the help of a third-generation gelato maker from Italy, he came over from Italy to train Brian on how to make traditional gelato. We added the old world flavors he taught us, along with the modern American traditional flavors too, so we have a nice selection for everyone.

Describe your store: 
Our shop is a small, quaint place that gets very busy in the summer months. We are in process of remodeling it during part of December 2015/January 2016, so stop by and visit us when we are done!

Tell us about your customers: 
We get diverse customers from all over the world, as everyone loves gelato!  We specialize in the highest quality of gelato, our dairy based flavors are made with exotic flavors like Turkish Hazelnuts, Thai Coconut Milk, and premium Black Cocoa.  Our fruit flavors are dairy-free and we use local fruits whenever possible.  So our customers can always find a flavor they like.

Why did you choose to open a store in Kirkland?
We picked Kirkland because of the great town and location. There are great restaurants and shops all around us and it's a very walkable town. We love it here!

What advice would you give to aspiring business owners?
Know your customers, they are very sophisticated, and give them the best customer service possible. Always smile and be kind to everyone.

Tell us about a current product you are excited about: 
We have about 100 flavors of gelato, and each season we switch the gelato around. We always keep our basic standards, example: Dutch Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, but at the holiday times we get Candy Cane, Egg Nog, Rum Raisin, Pumpkin, etc. We are always coming up with another new flavor.Gelato contains less air content than regular ice cream, and not frozen as deeply, resulting in a dense creamier texture. Everyone of all ages love gelato!
