Tell us about yourself!
Our family emigrated from Ukraine back in 1989. We settled in Pittsburgh and then moved to Seattle in 2007. Our backgrounds include fashion design, tailoring and dressmaking as well as computer engineering and software consulting.
What inspired you to open your store?
Coming from the former USSR, where entrepreneurship was not possible or legal, we are grateful to be citizens of the Unites States of America and are inspired to run and grow our own independent and local small business.
Describe your store:
Seattle Thread Company is a local and independent men’s outfitter specializing in business-casual clothing featuring on-site tailoring and made-to-measure suiting. We offer a well-curated collection of comfortable, fashionable, and high-quality clothing, shoes, and accessories.
Tell us about your customers:
We are proud to be a main street storefront in Downtown Kirkland—our regular customers live locally and like the convenience, selection and service that we are able to offer. We have many busy gents for whom we are a perfect one-stop outfitter so they do not have to spend an entire afternoon frequenting a mall’s large retailers with their sometimes daunting and imperfect offerings.
What is your favorite thing about being a small business owner?
Being able to offer a world-class shopping experience for our gentlemen and their families in a relaxed and friendly main street setting without pushy salespeople is very satisfying. Going to trade shows, meeting with the designers and brand reps, and determining the styles that we will carry each season is also tremendous. We are an integral part of the local economy and support many US and international companies when we buy from them - not just clothing but supplies, fixtures, IT Services, and of course lunch.
Why did you choose to open your store in Kirkland?
Kirkland was the ideal location for our concept business-casual men’s shop—an upscale and walkable Main-Street setting with the right demographics and affordable commercial space. Seattle also had potential locations to open a men’s specialty shop, however I could not deal with the chaos of downtown Seattle. Other main locations, such as Ballard, South Lake Union, and Fremont just did not have the right feel and demographics for the concept.
What advice would you give to aspiring business owners?
Research and plan everything, and never stop improving or become complacent. Being agile and independent has its advantages and they need to be used properly. We see a lot of poorly-run businesses out there—do it right!

We sell many pairs of Alberto brand jeans—they are absolutely the most comfortable, durable, and flattering pants out there. We have been stocking this brand since we opened and it has always been popular with our customers.
