Know Before You Go: Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom in Kirkland, WA
Mark your calendars for a powerful and uplifting afternoon as Kirkland proudly honors Juneteenth!
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, join friends, neighbors, and community leaders at Juanita High School for the “Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom”—a free, family-friendly event presented by Eastside celebrating Black excellence, cultural pride, and the enduring spirit of liberation.
A Celebration Rooted in History and Hope
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day for remembering our nation’s complex past while celebrating the strength, achievements, and ongoing contributions of Black communities across the country.
In Kirkland, Juneteenth is honored with a uniquely local flavor, reflecting the vibrant energy and unity of East King County. Since 2020, this annual celebration has been led by a dynamic coalition of Black leaders, community advocates, and organizations including Blacks at Microsoft (BAM), the Lake Washington School District, Eastside For All, and many others committed to racial equity and justice.
