Beginner to Intermediate Painting

This class is for both beginners and more advanced students who want to develop their painting skills further through direct observations.

In this class you will develop an eye for composition and learn to describe forms and colors by working from life using still life setups. We start with compositional studies, color studies, and progress to larger compositional pieces. You will learn to focus on the big forms and their interaction with a light source, and work rapidly to capture the big shapes and value changes. Each class will start with a demo and lecture, and followed with student work and critiques. For more advanced students, in addition to composition and color mixing, we will focus on your drawing accuracy, paint handling with more advanced setups to keep you challenged.

The best way to improve is by regular practice so there will be weekly homework.

I will demo in oil and the students are welcome to work in their preferred painting medium.

Supplies:

This course includes access to a curated set of professional-quality oil painting materials for shared use in the studio. Our goal is to reduce cost barriers and allow students to focus on learning rather than sourcing supplies. Students are welcome to bring their own materials if they prefer, but it is not required. Those who plan to paint outside of class will want to have their own supplies for continued practice at home.

Please bring rags for cleaning up, a glass jar with lid for storing paint thinner and please dress for mess.

Students interested in developing a more comprehensive personal painting practice may wish to purchase additional supplies from the instructor's recommended materials list, provided in class.
