This September our Kirkland gallery presents four artists whose works explore transformation of nature. Kimberly Balla is drawn into an almost alchemical process, using a magic-like chemical approach to capture natural phenomena and freeze them in time. Her work speaks to the continual cycles of nature and existence, where transformation is both fleeting and eternal. Hannah Seki explores transformation through a personal lens, examining the tension between her Japanese and American cultural influences. Her work considers the contrast between Japanese ideals of understated beauty and Western ideals of self-expression.

Juliet Fiss approaches transformation through the language of mathematics and computer science. Her paintings visualize mathematical concepts and computer algorithms, drawing inspiration from her interests in computer vision, signal processing, and quantum computing. Translating systems of logic and computation into visual form, Fiss reveals the unexpected beauty within structures that are typically experienced through numbers, data, and code. While Barbara Robertson turns her attention outward to the evolving landscape of cities, architecture, and archaeology. Interested in disintegration and revelation, she finds beauty and meaning in what emerges through recovery, erosion, and dissolution. Crista Ann Ames similarly looks to what lies beneath familiar narratives, layering mythological and contemporary imagery within her ceramic sculptures. Ames challenges familiar tropes and reimagines the stories.
