Ryan James: Florilegium Art Installation
January 17, 2026 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Florilegium is a multi-media installation by James Gill and David Traylor. It is an abstract
portrayal and interpretation of gardens and nature. Unlike many traditional florilegia, the
installation is neither a published collection of works nor a physical collection of illustrations.
It is a weaving together of paintings, large scale photographs and garden “folly” sculptures.
Since the late 16 th century, the term “florilegium” has been used to broadly describe
anthologies or collections of chosen pieces. Over time it has come to literally mean “flower
book” that focused on the beauty, depiction and status of plants. These works often were
used to showcase private gardens allowing owners to display both their collections and their “refined” taste.
